At the beginning of the nineties of the 20th century, the valuable set of the castle and the manor houses were in a bad condition. The walls of the castle started to bend outward, the interior of the manor house was partly neglected and shabby.

In 1995 the "Förderverein Schloss Schlettau e.V." (i.e. the non-profit Castle Association) was founded by an initiative of the Mayor Mathias Greifenhagen. On the basis of a contract the Förderverein took it over the rescue the old buildings from ruin - supported by the municipal authorities.

So, the decay could be stopped by means of a total refurbishment and restoration according to the rules of preservation of historic buildings in the years 1996 untill 2003. The rooms were renovated and rebuilt to a high suitabilty for the planned use. The Förderverein and the municipal authorities succeded in forming a "pool of sponsors" and achieved the following improvements:

The whole ensemble can now be seen in its historic appearance. All the measures of refurbishment and restoration means an apriciation of more than 2.5 millions Euro.

The historic monument is now run by the Förderverein Schloss Schlettau in a multifarious way for cultural, touristic and gastronomic purposes. The association has around 100 members, a great part of which has contributed to the restoration and development of the castle and is doing so now, especially to perform the guiding tours. Covering the current costs of runnig the castle is now the major task for the Förderverein - in spite of letting rooms and an attractive presentation of the building as well as the rooms and the park, it depends on donations and sponsoring.
