The history of the castle

Begins with settlements in the Upper Ore Mountains guided by noblemen of Crimmitschau at the turn of the 13th century and the foundation of the seigniory of Schlettau with a small fortress near the mouth of the rivers Zschopau and Rote Pfütze.

Around that, the Schönburgs erected in the 14th century a castle and the dominium "Sleten/Sletin" becomes a Bohemian crown fief in 1351. In the 15th century the abbots of the Grünhain monastery make the castle their secondary residence, rebuilting it into a palace around 1500. From the 16th century until 1796 it was used as a centre of hunting parties by the Dresden court and as seat of a Higer Master of Forestry and Hunting . A suit of manor houses are added in renaissance and baroque style.

During the 19th century, a spinning mill and a farming maschinery plant was run in and around the castle. In 1930 the minicipality of Schlettau acquired the historic buildings and turned them into a museum and into apartments. Since 1996 they are under the management of the Castle Association (Förderverein Schloss Schlettau e.V.) and a fully restored home of tourism and culture.
